Academy of Leadership

The debate has been active for years—can you teach leadership or are you born a leader?  Executive Women International stepped forward to address the question by designing the  Academy of Leadership for Member Firms and individual representatives of those firms.

The many industries that make up the membership of EWI teach industry-specific skills. The Academy of Leadership teaches leadership skills that are transferable regardless of industry and title.
The guiding principles on which the Academy of Leadership is based are as follows:
  • Leadership can and must be taught
  • Everyone has the capacity to lead
  • There are stellar examples of leadership within EWI

Academy of Leadership Faculty

Colette Carlson, MA

Audiences worldwide love the funny way Colette Carlson, MA, speaks the truth while inspiring them to maximize relationships, revenue and results. Only by telling the truth on herself was she able to overcome her own fears and addictions that kept her 50 lbs. overweight and making underwhelming choices. Whether she's opening for Suze Orman or speaking in house at Fortune 100 companies to include Microsoft, Boeing, New York Life, PepsiCo and Cisco, Colette brings her cutting-edge content and incredible sense of fun to every program.

As a human behavior expert she knows her stuff and has the research, education and experience to back it up which is why she's been featured in Success, Working Mother, and Personal Development Magazines, and interviewed on The Success Training Networks's "Made for Succeed" series. Colette's expertise has been sought after in motivational movies, Pass It On and Riches: The 7 Secrets of Wealth, in addition to her monthly column, "Tactfully Speaking" in Business Management Daily,

Her career began as an administrative assistant, then to straight-commissioned sales with legend Tom Hopkins. Colette became the #1 Sales Producer, leaped to Brian Tracy's International organization and applied her sales skills in a corporate environment as National Sales Trainer for US West. In the midst of raising her two daughters, Colette went back to night school to earn her Masters in Human Behavior which certainly helps now that they're teenagers!

"The idea for the Academy of Leadership was a dream during the time of people like Cherry York, Sandra Fields, Myra Trahern and their boards. The inspiration behind it was that we were providing  educational opportunities for our high school scholarship winners but what were we doing for our own members. Chapters had good monthly meeting speakers and what else could we do to support their efforts. We also heard that due to budget cuts many companies had dropped their own training departments. We felt strongly that we could provide a service and value for our own members by developing the Academy of Leadership. Thanks to the vision and funding that was provided by their companies, their chapters we were able to make a dream become reality."
