2008 ASIST Winners


Jennifer Acosta
EWI of San Diego

The birth of Jennifer’s daughter caused her to look at her life from a different perspective. She reenrolled in college where she is pursuing a B.S. degree in nursing with a long-term goal of earning a Master’s degree. Jennifer hopes to one day work as a nurse practitioner.


Erin Brecheen
EWI of Orlando

Erin is in her second semester of Seminole Community College’s Physical Therapy Assistant program. Prior to the PTA program, she spent six years teaching dance and three years volunteering as an instructor for disabled horseback riders. Erin’s goal is to graduate in the Spring of 2009 with an A.S. in Physical Therapy Assisting.


Danae Curtis
EWI of Minneapolis

Danae is one semester away from earning her Bachelor’s degree in Public Health and Community and Diversity Issues from the University of Minnesota. She is the mother of identical twin boys.


Alisha Hughes
EWI of Kansas City

Alisha will earn an Associate in Applied Science- CISCO Networking in May 2009, which will make her the first person in her family to earn a college degree. Her motivation for furthering her education is to provide a better life for her family.

EWI of Tuscon

Growing up poor with an abusive and alcoholic father, Monica never thought she would attend college. Monica is currently a senior at the University of Arizona, working on her B.S. in mathematics with a minor in biochemistry. Her goals are to graduate Summa Cum Laude and attend graduate school.

EWI of Nashville

Charity is currently a student at the University of Tennessee, working toward a Master’s of Social Work degree. She plans to work as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker counseling children and families involved in the child welfare system.

 



ASIST WinnerMisty Lewis
EWI of Harrisburg

Misty became interested in neurological psychology after her husband suffered a brain aneurysm. She is pursuing a degree in Psychology at Penn State University Capitol Campus and plans to pursue a career in psychological neurology.

EWI of Atlanta

JaTonya Y. Mitchell is a second-year student at Georgia Perimeter College matriculating toward a degree in Nursing. She plans to complete her educational training and ultimately to provide care to under-served urban communities.

EWI of Lehigh Valley

Jenni is a divorced mother of three. Since graduation from high school, her goal has been to become an elementary school teacher. She believes that it is important for her to finish
college in order to show her family and children that anything is possible.

 


Henrietta S. Pappas
EWI of Chicago

Henrietta, as a single mother of three, has always placed education first with her children. She is now leading by example and going back to school to obtain her Nursing degree.


ASIST WinnerAnna Ryjkova
EWI of Pittsburgh

Anna grew up in Kursk, Russia, where her family was discriminated against
because of their Christian beliefs. Anna later moved to Erie, PA, where she earned a BS in
Marketing at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania. Her goal is to become an attorney and to help individuals with limited resources and education.

This scholarship recipient changed her place of residence, her name, the names of her children, and her course of study to escape a life-threatening domestic violence situation. She is studying to become a Certified Public Accountant.
